QUESTIONS 

1. The Iron Age had a significant influence on our continent due to the arrival of enslaved Africans. Their culture has been retained as a result of syncretic believe systems such as santeria dances and cultural practices such as carnival. How was the retention of African religious and cultural practices possible in our continent?

2. When we started the unit on Ancient Egypt and the subsequent Ptolemaic Dynasty, we underlined the importance of their processions. What was the main purpose of processions then and currently?

3. After the Jewish people left Egypt, they settled in different areas of the world where they created new performance practices. The Yemenite dance we saw in class was descriptive of the diasporic journey of Hebrew people. Explain.

4. Greek Theater developed as a result of myths and ritual practices. However, theater was not really Greek, it was Athenian. Why was the Athenian chorus an important development in the performing arts?

 5. Ancient Rome copied from Greece most of its cultural practices except pantomime, which they, the Romans, created. What makes pantomime an effective way of communicating a story?

6. Almost never do we get to study classic cultures other than the Greek and Roman. What makes the Ancient Mayan, Indian and Chinese cultures classic?

7. In class we saw some clips of Romeo and Juliet, specifically the ball scene where the two characters meet. What was the main function of dance during medieval times for the upper class?

8.  Ballet was born during the Renaissance period. Why was ballet one of the most important dances in the history of world dance?

9. The first school of Modern Dance in America was created by Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis. Four main techniques emerged as a result of the modern dance movement. Which are the 4 main modern dance techniques? In which way are they different from each other?

10.  Post Modern and Contemporary dance genres both freed the body from any codified language. How are the two similar and at the same time different?

    Unit : Fundamentals Theme :   Re-framing History I   Introduction   Learning about history requires a learning environment where everyone feels included so that everyone's own histories count as much as what is recorded in published sources. Therefore, introducing ourselves and learning each other's names becomes a necessary step in creating a safe learning environment. Class today is about re-framing our concept of history.
